Honduras has been one of my dream destinations for as long as I can remember, but I just visited for the first time this May. I flew to the country's west coast, arriving at San Pedro Sula airport (via a direct American Airlines flight from Houston) to reach the sprawling Pico Bonito National Park. Honduras has a surprising amount of pristine, protected natural area and wildlife reserves (twice as much as Costa Rica) and Pico Bonito, with its 500 species of native and migratory birds and lush rainforest and cloud forest terrain extending to the top of the Nombre de los Dios mountains, is a paradise for naturalists and eco-travelers. I spent the weekend at The Lodge at Pico Bonito, the 22-cabin luxury eco-lodge (which has hosted the likes of Catherine Zeta Jones and Pamela Anderson) at the edge of the park's nuclear rainforest zone, where I experienced the wild and wonderful inner workings of the surrounding jungle in style.

I've always loved Galveston, and now I have a local connection. My boyfriend's grandmother, Alba Collins, grew up in a tiny house underneath the island's first wooden rollercoast in the 1930s. And we visit her every so often, spending sunny, summer weekends soaking our toes in the Gulf waters as we listen to her stories about Galveston in earlier days. ¶ To me, the history of Galveston Island is as alluring as the area's scenic beauty. I love learning about places like the Balinese Room, which attracted celebrities such as Bob Hope and Frank Sinatra in the 1940s; the first International Pageant of Pulchritude of 1926, which drew 150,000 people to the island to witness a bathing-beauty revue; and the nation's longest Pleasure Pier, where sightseers boarded a glittering Ferris wheel to witness panoramic views of the harbor.

Nothing beats living in a city filled to the brim with cool places to go and exciting activities to try. But the huge number of swimming holes, movie theaters, parks and museums can be so overwhelming that it’s easy to fall into a rut of relying on your old standbys. Kyoto has long been known as the heart and soul of Japan’s traditional culture and arts. Its centuries-old temples and geisha districts have become the emblematic ideal of Japan imagery. But despite the more than 1,600 temples, 400 Shinto shrines and 17 UNESCO World Heritage sites, the city offers much more than postcard-perfect images to more than 50 million annual visitors. ¶ The city’s historic attractions, prewar architecture (it was spared, unlike in Japan’s other major cities, from World War II bombings due to its ancient, religious significance to the Japanese people) and the latest contemporary trends and modern comforts make it an ideal city for design. From Heian-period architecture and ancient bamboo forests to a revival of modern art museums and maiko (apprentice geisha) performances — Japan’s Old Capital is full of new life. Spend a week exploring Kyoto’s diverse charms during the springtime, when a heavenly backdrop of the country’s renowned cherry blossoms frames the city’s venerable temples and timeworn streets.

The natural world is the main inspiration for local designer and stylist Ann Lowe, whose unique aesthetic is typified by organic materials, natural light and a streamlined minimalism. ¶ “I love space and openness,” she says, attributing her affinity for simplicity to a childhood spent in West Texas and long-standing loves for mystic destinations, like Santa Fe and Big Bend National Park. “And I’m a very functional type of person.” But her roots reach even deeper when it comes to her earthly inspirations.

The Japanese art of chabana, which literally translates to “tea flowers,” is an ancient style of flower arranging used in traditional Japanese tea ceremonies. It’s a dazzling form of floral display (with roots in the more recognizable form of ikebana) that is simple to learn, easy to individualize and, ultimately, creates an indelibly bold impression on guests. Japan’s tradition of tea ceremonies dates back to the 9th century and is the country’s oldest customs of hospitality. There’s a standard design aesthetic for traditional tearooms (tatami mat floors, low ceilings, etc.), but the same ritual can be conducted in any room of any modern home.

My first trip to Japan took me throughout the country's rural west coast, but, this February, I had the chance to explore more of the urban areas in and around Kyoto and Tokyo. ¶ I ate a daily regimen of kaiseki cuisine, wandered through Shinjuku's chic boutiques and Akihabara's bizarre maid cafes, studied some of Kyoto's best modern and traditional design and, in celebration of Hina-Matsuri (Girls' Day), was dressed in the 12-layer kimono that Imperial princesses wore on their wedding day centuries ago.

I recommend the trip to anyone and everyone, especially with the addition of American Airlines' new non-stop flights from JFK to Haneda Airport, which previously didn't receive international flights, and is only minutes from downtown Tokyo.

Before opening vintage menswear shop, Sam Hill, Kyle Muller had always wanted to be Indiana Jones. Just without the boring day job. ¶ He actually gave archeology the old college try, but it wasn’t for him. Muller just wanted to hunt for treasure; to roam the globe and risk hell or high water to rescue precious relics from the brink of extinction. Throughout his childhood, he spent countless days exploring the creek beds behind his family's home, searching for interesting rocks and fossils. (He even found a dinosaur bone when he was 12.) He dug up his backyard with his trusty metal detector and shovel and fell asleep fantasizing about ancient treasure maps waiting to be discovered.

When one cannot be sure that there are many days left, each single day becomes as important as a year, and one does not waste an hour in wishing that that hour were longer, but simply fills it, like a smaller cup, as high as it will go without spilling over.

I am climbing I think it's a ladder
but I don't have to hold on

I don't even have to climb
I just do
Or it's something akin to climbing
on something akin to a ladder

From up here I can see both my head
and my body and the river between
and when the river stops flowing
I will find myself next to a hut in the Alps
with cows and flowers but without words

But that's for later
